To Hell with the TSA, Fly Yourself in an Aircar (Maybe)

RocketIn reading this press release, I can’t help but imagine Johnny Knoxville in Jackass Two. Even if you haven’t seen the movie, you’ve seen the clip with ole’ Johnny strapped to the rocket on the previews.

When you hear the words “Magic Dragon,” I bet you think of Puff. Whether it be the cartoon, the Peter, Paul and Mary song or just the conversation between Ben Stiller and Robert DeNiro in Meet the Parents. Well, now Magic Dragon refers to a very different thing. It is the name given to Safety Analyis Systems Company and it’s subsidiary StrongMobile Systems Engineering’s concept project, the Magic Dragon Aircar. According to the press release issued to The Auto Channel on September 22, the aircar is ready for prototype. Orders are being taken and delivery is estimated to begin in 2010.

For real.

Like Taking Candy From a Baby: Get Cash Back or Mileage Rewards When You Dine with Rewards Network

WineThe only easier way to earn miles than with the Rewards Network is to receive them as a gift. This program determines about 85% of my dining choices while on the road. You’ve got to eat out, so why not earn those coveted miles while you’re at it. As a Tier 1 member with Northwest Airlines, I earn 10 miles per dollar spent. Eating out twice a day, you can accumulate more miles with this program than you do with your flight. Especially if you’re entertaining clients and have a several hundred dollar tab at the end of the evening. What’s the coolest thing about it? You get credit for the food AND you get credit for the booze, so drink up.

One of the great things about this program is that they have great quality participating restaurants. Unfortunately, there may be very few of them in the geographic area in which you travel. I don’t think there is any rhyme or reason to this, possible just better sales people in some areas than in others. I’ve found some of my favorite restaurants using the Rewards Network, including the Greek Village Tavern in Schaumburg, Illinois and Ponchatoulas in Ruston, Louisiana.

Impress Your Houston Clients: Take Them to Minute Maid Park

Minute Maid Park

I’m not a big fan of the Astros (I’m a Braves girl, that should explain it all), but lots of business travelers visit Houston frequently so I feel obliged to tell you all about Minute Maid Park. It’s the coolest baseball stadium I’ve ever seen, and therefore a great opportunity to impress clients and colleagues in Houston. It was built in 2000, so it isn’t a historic park but I think it’s way cooler than the other new parks that have been built since then.

Are Services Like Rebtel Too Much Work for Business Travelers?

Cell PhoneRebtel and Jajah are telcom services that allow you to use your regular mobile phone to place international calls for next to nothing. Unlike Skype, you don’t need to be in a wifi hotspot to make it happen. But it does require a little extra effort, which may or may not be worth the time. This leads to the question: Is
Rebtel worth the hassle?

If you travel to a few international destinations on a regular basis (like your plant in Mexico and office in India), it may be an effective way to keep in touch with the home base without having to search for a hotspot.
