Travel Jobs: Bus Driver - So You Want to Travel for Work but You Couldn’t Sell Brownies at a Panic Show…

Bus DriverBe a bus driver. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, you DO NOT have to be in sales to travel for work. You can even be a bus driver - no kidding.

So this isn’t the best way to use your hotshot MBA, but don’t knock it. You can be a true road warrior without going to college. The pay isn’t much (you really can’t expect much without an education), but you do get to see the country. And in most cases, you should receive per-diem benefits while away from home. These jobs aren’t nearly as difficult to achieve as travel nursing or coding auditor and you probably won’t have the opportunity to visit exotic destinations, but you’ll definitely be on the road.

Coach America has bus driver jobs in California, Nevada, Florida, Colorado and Texas. Qualifications are basically: must be 21 years or older, must be able to pass a criminal background check and must be qualified to operate a vehicle. For all that, you’ll get somewhere between $10 to $15 an hour plus benefits.

Greyhound has driver openings in: Albany, Boston, Cincinnati, Denver, Detroit, Grand Junction, Kansas City, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, Reno, Richmond, Sacramento, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington DC. Qualifications are about the same, but you have to be 22 years of age.

Not everyone can get a glamorous jetsetter job, but that doesn’t mean you should be stuck in the office. If you’re tired of being a desk jockey, this may be your calling.

I once had an extended conversation with a Greyhound driver who did a daily route across North Dakota and back. Based on his insane rumblings and permanent deer in headlight look, I would recommend that unless you are looking to become intentional off your rocker, you avoid driving a bus in North Dakota on a daily basis.
