Fon and Time Warner Cable Free Wi-Fi

Fon, a company similar to Whisker I wrote about several months ago, has paired with Time Warner Cable to offer the company’s free Wi-Fi routers to customers. The router allows other Fon members to tap in to your Wi-Fi when they are in the area. Likewise, when you travel you can access the Wi-Fi of any Fon member that is in the area.

It was speculated that broadband providers would discourage the service, as it is providing people with free access. But Time Warner has embraced the idea as a selling point for its service over others. With other companies, once you leave your home or office, you lose your connection. With Time Warner and Fon, once you leave your home you can keep connected if someone else in the area has the router.
