The Old Mill in North Little Rock, Arkansas
The Old Mill in North Little Rock, Arkansas is a beautiful spot to visit any time of the year. If you’re in Little Rock for business or pleasure, you really should take the time to see the historic Pugh’s Mill, which was featured in the opening credits of Gone With the Wind. Every Arkansan knows about the place, and hordes of people make the trip with a photographer in tow for high school senior pictures and wedding photos. Don’t let that discourage you, it usually isn’t that crowded. …

Branch Brook Park Cherry Blossom Festival
Branch Brook Park in Essex County, New Jersey (which is located in the cities of Newark and Belleville) is gearing up for its annual cherry blossom festival which is held in April of each year. The pink and white cherry blossoms, which were planted in a style reminiscent of a Japanese garden, bloom for about 3 weeks each April. Branch Brook Park was the first County Park opened to the public in the United States, which is a reason to visit in and of itself. The annual event, which …

Walk, Jog or Even Rollerblade to the Big Dam Bridge in Little Rock, Arkansas
This weekend marked the opening of the Big Dam Bridge, connecting Burns Park and Murray Park in central Arkansas (which links North Little Rock and Little Rock, if you aren’t in the know). In the southland, the temperatures are still regularly in the 80’s in October so this is a great spot to get a little exercise action between work and happy hour.

The Art Institute of Chicago: Priceless
Got a free evening in Chi-Town? Head downtown to the Art Institute for Free Tuesday. Guided tours are available at certain times on these evenings. Everyone needs a little Cezanne and Toulouse-Lautrec every now and then. Picasso is my fav, and he’s pretty well reprenented at the Institute. This is one of the most amazing collections in the United States so you really have to go at least once. If you don’t, your artist friends will shake their heads in pity at you. Trust me, I know.

Texas Bluebonnet Trail
The bluebonnet is the official flower of the state of Texas. On the same day trip during which I saw Luckenbach, I drove a stretch of the “Bluebonnet Trail” in the Texas hill country outside of Austin. Here’s what you do (from the Austin visitor’s guide).
The stretch between Burnet and Marble Falls was quite pretty. I had heard of the bluebonnets and the trail, but never a peep about the cacti in the area. This isn’t the arid, desert part of the state so the cacti …

San Antonio Riverwalk in San Antonio, Texas
San Antonio, Texas has the most beautiful Riverwalk I’ve ever seen. Ours in Little Rock is desolate in comparison to the Texas version, although we do have MILES of walking/bike tracks available crossing the Big Dam Bridge.
The San Antonio Riverwalk is lined with bars restaurants and hotels, as well as beautiful bridges and palm trees. I had the opportunity to eat at Casa Rio, which boasted a HUGE expanse of riverside real estate, as well as fantastic margaritas. I regret that I wasn’t able to visit …

The Most Famous Hill in Texas: The Grassy Knoll
If you haven’t had enough conspiracy action lately or you just love JFK the movie (or JFK the man), go see Dealey Plaza and the Grassy Knoll when you’re in Dallas, Texas.
It is a place of huge historical significance, so you might as well give it a few minutes. Besides, it’s free and therefore good. The buildings surrounding the plaza, along with most of the signs have been unchanged since the 1963 assassination. In a city where everything is shiny and new, it’s an interesting change of pace. If you’re really in to it, you can visit the Sixth Floor Museum in the Book Depository building.

Centennial Park: Nashville, Tennessee
I wish I would have looked in to this location a little more before my most recent trip to Nashville. Located near the Vandy Campus, this park is exactly what you need for a little urban R and R.
