Work for a Company that Cares - 2007 Company Honor Roll

Manager of the UniverseCompanies that Care judges companies based on 10 criteria to determine how well they treat employees. The companies that achieve the Honor Roll are the top 35 caring companies as determined by the organization. If you’re looking for a travel job for a company that will treat you right, you might want to check out the list.

According to Marci Kolbez, founder of the center, “Some employers were concerned about the well being of their employees and it permeated everything they did. In those organizations the employees felt it and they really aligned their own values with those of the company. You could see they tried hard to make the business successful because they felt the business was trying hard to help them be successful.” Wow, you mean some people have jobs where they WANT to be because the company treats them WELL? Apparently so. I think it’s glaringly obvious that if you take care of your people, your people will take care of you but many, many employers (like my last sales employer) seem to have trouble understanding that concept.

Anyway, here they are. The 2007 Center for Companies that Care Honor Roll. The companies on the list spent 12 to 15 hours filling out applications to be considered for this honor. If they’re on this list, it’s because they really made an effort to be. If a company isn’t on this list, it doesn’t mean it isn’t a fantastic place to work. They may just be unfamiliar with the center or not have turned in an application.

Travel Job: MySpace and New York Times Jounalism Internship in Africa

South AfricaMy Space and the New York Times are working together to offer the second annual “Win a Trip with Nick” African reporting competition. This essay competition will allow one college student and one middle or high school teacher the opportunity to travel to Africa with the Pulitzer Prize winning columnist Nick Krisof in June. This is a HUGE opportunity for any person who fits the limited criteria and who would like to pursue a career in travel journalism in the future.

MySpace is creating a customized community to “engage users in the contest and offer video from the expedition, raising awareness about the challenges facing strife-ridden African nations.”

“Traveling through Asia and Africa when I was in college was a turning point in my life,” said Kristof. “My hope is that the student and teacher who join me this summer will be similarly affected and will share their discoveries about Africa and its people with their peers and their students.”

Travel Jobs: Behavioral Interviews

BookkeeperBehavioral interviews are the trend of the time in human resources. To put it nicely, this interview style is a load of crap.

I’m happy to tell you my recent job search and subsequent training have come to an end. I am happily installed in my new profession and place of residence in Newark, New Jersey. That being said, it was hell just trying to find a travel job.

For those of you who are now on your search for employment that extends beyond the borders of a cubicle in an office, I’m afraid you’ll encounter the above mentioned behavioral interview method. I’m sorry for that. The problem with this style is that it is not in fact determining the best candidate for the job but only the biggest B.S.er in the interview group. I’m not saying the questions asked aren’t a valid indicator; I’m saying the method is bad. Interviewees are put under pressure to come up with a stellar response on the fly. That’s an important trait if you’re planning on a sales career, but it isn’t really necessary for most jobs. Many well qualified candidates are slipping through the cracks because they didn’t come up with a great “Name a time you went above and beyond the call of duty” response, even though they may have actually gone above and beyond the call of duty on many occasions. It’s just hard to come up with the best response under that kind pressure. Does that indicate a person can’t ACT under pressure? Of course not. Just like having an argument with your boyfriend, these applicants think of the BEST responses when they’re brushing their teeth that night - after it’s just too late.
