San Antonio, Texas has the most beautiful Riverwalk I’ve ever seen. Ours in Little Rock is desolate in comparison to the Texas version, although we do have MILES of walking/bike tracks available crossing the Big Dam Bridge.
The San Antonio Riverwalk is lined with bars restaurants and hotels, as well as beautiful bridges and palm trees. I had the opportunity to eat at Casa Rio, which boasted a HUGE expanse of riverside real estate, as well as fantastic margaritas. I regret that I wasn’t able to visit any of the other fine establishments in the area on this trip, such as Durty Nelly’s Pub. I probably need a t-shirt from that place.
Riverboat tours are available highlighting the rich history of the river and the area. The tours are about 40 minutes and under $10 for an adult. This is a good after work option for business travelers, as the tours run at night as well as during the day.
While the Riverwalk is a great place for nightlife, it is also a wonderful spot for walking or jogging in the morning. I can’t think of a better way to start your day than to work up a sweat on the banks of the river. The area is only STEPS away from the Alamo, so it would be easy to stop by for a few drinks after your tour through Texas history. Be aware, the river smells a lot like a fish bowl. Seriously. Don’t worry, you’ll get used to it in a jiffy. (Although, I guess I’m not allowed to talk about the way places smell now that I live in New Jersey
)
There are several trolley stops a stones throw from the water, although it is easily within walking distance of anyplace downtown.
