There’s a cocktail that originated in the area around Venice called a “spritz” (which is pronounced “spreetz”) and is now relatively common throughout Italy. It’s made with prosecco (sparkling white wine), soda water, and an Italian bitters (usually Campari or Aperol).

Here’s a concoction from Normandy:
You mix together apple cider, pommeau and a dab of Calvados. The cider here is hard cider, the pommeau is an apple based before dinner drink and the Calvados is apple brandy/moonshine. I’ll have to doublecheck on the proportions.

Be careful if you order a martini in France – it’s really sweet vermouth on the rocks – which is OK if you know that’s what you’ve ordered.
