Going to New Comiskey Park (Guess What? Noone Really Calls it U.S. Cellular Field)

Crede at BatThe first time I went to see the White Sox at New Comiskey Park, I took the red line on the L train to the Sox/35th Street exit. Nearing the street entrance, I walked over the White Sox logo fresco in the floor to the information booth. I asked how to get to the park from there. After they stopped laughing at me, one of the fabulous CTA employees pointed out the gaping entrance, across the street to the hulking structure. If it was a snake, it would have bit me.

I’ve never been an American League fan, but the Sox stole my heart last season. The two games I went to were the VERY best two live baseball games I’ve ever seen in my entire life. What made it so great? The games were really close and well played and the fans were PHENOMENAL. If the Sox had lost either game, I really doubt it would have been such a love fest. Fortunately for me and the Sox, they won both.

The second game I attended was Game 2 of the 2005 World Series. How did I manage that? I HAD to meet with a really important client Monday morning, so I flew up a day early. I can’t tell you how amazing it is, having grown up in a suburb of Little Rock, Arkansas, where the nearest professional baseball field is 344 miles away, to make it to the World Series. Did I have a great seat? No. I paid 4 times the face value for a seat one row from the top in section 554. Did that matter? Hell no, I was at the World Series. I was the only girl by myself in a section surrounded by men. They were okay with me as soon as I told them I was rooting for the Sox.

Crede, Konerko and Podsednik stole my heart in the pouring rain that day. Who ever gets to see a grand slam in the World Series? While I’ll always be a Braves fan, the 2005 White Sox will always have a place in my heart.
