Magellan + AAA = One Heck of a Navigation System

Magellan® GPS recently announced a partnership with AAA to create the new RoadMate AAA RS2.0 navigation system. The new system will debut at the SEMA show in Las Vegas, Nevada, which is happening now. The system will feature preloaded street maps for the United States and AAA rated properties, including hotels and restaurants. According to the press release:

This special edition of the Magellan RoadMate is the only auto navigation device to integrate the AAA TourBook guide listings for quick routing to AAA rated hotels, restaurants, and attractions. In addition, the customized product will offer Magellan’s superior voice- and text- guided turn-by-turn directions with nationwide street maps preloaded on the built-in hard drive for door-to-door guidance anywhere in North America. AAA Mid-Atlantic, California State Automobile Association, AAA Western and Central New York, and AAA Auto Club South will offer the Magellan RoadMate AAA RS2.0 to its members through their online stores and club offices.

CrossoverAt a nifty 5” x 4” x 1.5”, this system is portable enough for the business traveler to take in the car and in the air. It will be available through aaa.com and most local auto clubs. It’s actually amazing how many times I’ve been stopped in the airport for the TSA to check my GPS. I guess it looks threatening.

Magellan also plans to debut their new CrossoverGPS at SEMA, combining the functionality of the RoadMate with the conveinece of a hand-held. The CrossoverGPS will allow user to utilize the included road maps, as well as outdoor maps.

Does this mean they’re winning the war with Garmin?
