* Review: I am Mexican food’s biggest fan, but I didn’t know what to think when a friend made reservations for Tamayo, a new “Modern Mexican” restaurant in Denver, Colorado. The chef, Richard Sandoval, has quite a pedigree, but it just didn’t sound…Mexican. It was fantastic! I had the Ahi Tuna special, which was superb although not quite as good as the Ahi steak at Gulfstream in New Orleans. It was served rare with sauteed spinach and mushrooms atop some kind of corn offering. The meal was served with black beans; I despise beans (seriously, if I die and go to hell it will be filled with beans, wasps and the New York Yankees) so they brought me rice as a substitute. The rice tasted like it was prepared out of a box, but the rest of the meal more than made up for that shortcoming. For dessert, I tried the Empanadas de Platano, which were filled with walnuts, cream and topped with coconut ice cream. Delicious!

Tamayo is in a great downtown Denver location, and ample (paid) parking is available. This would be a great place to take clients for lunch or drinks, as the mango margarita was out of this world and the bar features a great mosaic. It might be a little loud for business, but perfect for entertainment.
