The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California

Golden Gate BridgeThe Golden Gate Bridge is the icon of San Francisco and one of the most recognizable landmarks in the United States. I have always wanted to visit the bridge and finally had the opportunity last week. The view of bridge was partially obscured by fog, which is the case more often than not. It was still an amazing site to see, though.

The Golden Gate Bridge was completed on May 27, 1937. It was, at the time, the longest suspension bridge in the world. It has since been surpassed by the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge Bridge in New York. The Golden Gate is a suspension bridge connecting the city of San Francisco with Marin County. It spans the waters between the Pacific and the San Francisco Bay.

Golden Gate Bridge 2I spent an hour or so in the Chrissy Field area of the Presidio National Park, adjacent to the bridge. The views from this area are spectacular and it is a great place to sit for a while. There is a beach full of wind surfers and dog walkers, which lends to the great atmosphere. There are some CHARACTERS in the place, too. I had to “zip up” some girl dressed like Batman who was going wind surfing. I can’t imagine setting foot in that water, even with a wetsuit. When I’m chilly with three layers of clothing on, I just don’t think it’s time to get in the water. To each their own. During my visit, there was even a (humpback?) whale REALLY close to the shore. You could see it blowing water in to the air and swimming around. It was a really amazing site. There is parking available in the park and I have to recommend a trip to this area, even if your trip to San Francisco will be a short one. Take a picnic and a jacket. You surely won’t regret it.
