When you’re traveling, either for work or pleasure, you’re lucky if you’ve learned a few polite phrases in the local language. Most of the time, you’re forced to get by on gestures. In many countries, you can learn to recognize the names of streets or foods, even if you can’t pronounce them – but when you’re traveling in a place that has a completely different alphabet than the one you’re used to, you become a functional illiterate.
